Make It From Scratch Challenge- DIY Mosquito repellent.

Crystal over at Money saving Mom is having a Make It From Scratch Challenge this week and I thought that I would join in.

On Friday, a group of mums and I went out with our toddlers to a place where the children could paddle. The spot (Otonashi-shinsui park- Tokyo with kids post to follow this coming week) is well shaded and involves water. A perfect recipe for mosquitos. We all had dutifully bought our repellent and upon arrival were all spraying like mad. In one instant I got caught down wind and, as I inhaled the fumes, I wondered what we were doing to our lungs…
So a bit of research on the world-wide web resulted in a little experiment…

Apparently, mosquitos don’t like oil as it breaks down the outside of their bodies. If you mix it with a strong-smelling substance, it will detract them even more.

So I created 4 repellents with what I had at home(which wasn’t very much.)

1: Grapeseed oil
2: Grapeseed oil + teatree oil
3: Olive oil
4: Olive oil + tea tree oil

I rub each one onto my limbs- No 1 on my left leg, No.2 on my left arm, No 3 on my right leg, No 4 on my right arm and then went down stairs to our car park which always has masses of mosquitos.

The results were pretty interesting…
They DON’T like the oil… They were buzzing round my face a lot.
The grapeseed oil was ‘penetrated’, but the teatree oil was not appreciated.

So my recommendation is:
Olive oil with a mix of teatree oil- but olive oil on its own worked well too!

Other suggestions online are: (I have not tried these)
Lemon balm
Curry (not sure I would go for this one!)

That said- my skin was very oily and I’m not sure how comfortable it would be for a long period of time in the heat and humidity that is Tokyo in summer. So I think I am still on the fence on this one.

Let me know if you try it out what you think!

About Cheryl

I am a child of God, a wife and a mother of 4 children. Some days are good. Some days are frustrating. Some days are just plain insane. In between the mayhem, I loved to go for walks with our mutt, potter in the garden and enjoy the beauty that surrounded us. That all changed in August 2012 when we waved goodbye to our mutt and garden, our eldest at Uni in Gloucester and moved to Tokyo for 4 months. And yes- we are still here...
