40 Days of Smiles

Things in our household are at times fraught.
One of my darlings is struggling with anger issues at the moment and it’s made worse when she is tired and/or hungry. Unfortunately, despite my best efforts, it inevitably gets to me and we come to blows.

angry face

I don’t like it.
I’m concerned that I am damaging our relationship.
I feel guilty as I feel that I am not showing a good example of how to be patient.
I’m concerned that it is becoming a habit for her, and it will become a character trait.
I’m concerned that she is going to have the same tendency as me towards depression.

Things in our household are at times whiney.
When the children aren’t allowed to play on the iPad.
When I ask them to help out with household tasks.
When I ask them to tidy up after themselves.
When they have to run errands with Mummy.

I’m tired of the emotions and moods.
I look at my children sometimes and feel like they are ungrateful brats. (Should I really say that?) In true motherhood style, I take on the guilt.
It’s my fault- I’ve indulged them, I’ve been their slave, I’ve run the errands when they aren’t around, I’ve made excusues for their behaviour.

I’d like things to change.

Last night I was praying about what I could do for Lent as I didn’t want to give something up.
(Selfishly I must confess that I don’t like to give things up as my birthday falls into Lent and I would like to enjoy a glass or two, eat some cake or chocolate and read my birthday wishes on FB!!)
I am planning to do a study on prayer over the next 40 days, but I wanted to do something more. That’s when the inspiration was planted.
Thank you Lord.

During the Lent period, my children and I are going to record what created a smile each day.
It could be something that we are grateful for.
It could be something fun that happened during the day.
It could be an act of kindness- that has created a smile on your own or someone else’s face.

If you would like a free printable to record your own smiles this Lent, please leave a comment below and I will email it to you.

Each Sunday, I will share with you an inspiring smile quote and every Friday some of our smiles.

I am hoping that this will result in our home being a happier place and it would be great if it could ripple out across the world.

Keep Smiling this Lent!

About Cheryl

I am a child of God, a wife and a mother of 4 children. Some days are good. Some days are frustrating. Some days are just plain insane. In between the mayhem, I loved to go for walks with our mutt, potter in the garden and enjoy the beauty that surrounded us. That all changed in August 2012 when we waved goodbye to our mutt and garden, our eldest at Uni in Gloucester and moved to Tokyo for 4 months. And yes- we are still here...

    What a fabulous idea!
I am struggling with an angry child at the moment too… and just really trying to turn the focus towards the positive helps us both cope!

This is brilliant. There is always a reason to smile. Stepping back to see how much we are blessed, is sometimes hard when we feel so stressed.

    Mercy + Grace = Gratitude & Love

You could put a smile on one’s face, when they never thought they would smile again. What a gift!! Use it well!

    God Bless You!
